How Many Times Do Drug Users Fail Rehab?

How Many Times Do Drug Users Fail Rehab?

There is no status-quo on how many times a drug user fails rehab. The numbers for how often addicts need to re-enter drug rehab vary with every year and from state to state. When thinking about a person's failed attempts at rehab, consider how many times it takes to learn something "new". That is essentially what people in recovery are doing, relearning how to live without drugs or alcohol.

When a person enters rehab they do not intend to fail. They often go with the objective of obtaining lasting abstinence from drugs and/or alcohol. Unfortunately, there are countless obstacles that hinder their sobriety once they leave treatment. It may be that returning to their past environment was to overwhelming and caused them to breakdown and use again. Or, they may run into old using friends and find that they are not as strong as they thought when it comes to turning down drugs.

If changing one's behavior about drug and Alcohol addiction was easy, there would be no reason for drug rehabs to exist. Changes that are difficult to achieve often involve several points along the way where we all tend to get "stuck" and hung up. Just because one rehab failed does not mean the person is doomed or "it isn't meant to be!" It simply means the rehab they attended did not work for them or that they did not truly apply the changes needed to remain sober. The wonderful thing about the drug rehabilitation field is that there so many different treatment methods to choose from. If the person is ready to try rehab again, researching a different type of rehab may be just what they need to finally achieve lasting abstinence from drugs or alcohol
